Irish cancer projects get grants from UK charity

Three breast cancer research projects in Ireland are to share more than €500,000 in funding from the British charity Breast Cancer Campaign.

The funding marks the first time such grants have been given to projects in Ireland.

The research will be carried out in Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Dr Marie McIlroy at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin has received €200,000 to identify which patients will develop resistance to breast cancer treatments.

Professor Rosemary O'Connor from UCC has been awarded the same amount to study the spread of cancer around the body, while Dr Adrienne Gorman from NUI Galway will receive €100,000 to study why some people do not benefit from chemotherapy.
