Silent protests for murdered soldiers

People in the North were today urged to attend a series of silent protests regarding the murder of the two soldiers in Antrim

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) is organising lunchtime rallies for workers and their families at City Hall in Belfast, Guildhall Square in Derry and Newry Town Hall on Wednesday.

It said other venues for silent protest and reflection would be announced.

Peter Bunting, general secretary of the ICTU said: “The horror and shock shown by the people of Northern Ireland in response to the repugnant murders last Saturday must be expressed publicly.

“Those who long for a society at peace with itself and with others can express their solidarity with that most dignified form of protest – a wall of human silence.”

He said people would be sending a message to the violent perpetrators of the atrocity at the Massereene army base that they had nothing which was worth listening to and that society had nothing to say to them until they stopped.

“We are inviting all workers and their families to express their abhorrence at these murders and the direct threat to the peace process.

“We must commonly affirm our determination that not a further single worker will be injured, intimidated or murdered by those who seek to derail the peace process,” said Mr Bunting.
