Consumer agency expecting fall in grocery prices

The National Consumer Agency says it expects to see the price of groceries decrease across the country over the next few months.

The agency's chief executive, Ann Fitzgerald, said today that she would expect to see the effects of expected deflation being passed on to consumers.

She was speaking at the publication of the NCA's latest survey, which found that prices increased over the past year in all supermarkets and convenience stores.

Tesco was found to be more expensive than Dunnes Stores and Superquin for branded goods, but cheaper for own-brand products.

The survey also found that, while Aldi and Lidl were still cheaper than their competitors, the price difference between them and other multiples did decrease over the year.
