No evidence of grenade attack on PSNI

Police in the North investigating claims a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at officers today said they have found no evidence of an attack.

Residents in the Fermanagh border village of Newtownbutler had been placed on high alert after phone warnings to media outlets indicating that the device had been launched at police but failed to explode.

The caller said the RPG was lying on wasteground on the outskirts of the village.

Police said extensive searches of the area, carried out since the warning was phoned in on Friday, had found nothing.

While a PSNI spokeswoman said there was no evidence to substantiate the attack claim she warned members of the public not to approach any suspicious objects and instead contact police immediately.

Dissident republicans in Fermanagh and elsewhere have been blamed for bomb and gun attacks on police in recent times and senior officers have said the threat remains grave.
