Roads claim three lives

Ireland’s roads have claimed another two lives, Gardaí announced today, and a third person died in the North.

A 24-year-old woman died in Co Laois when the car in which she was a passenger crashed off the road at Rossleaghan, Portlaoise and slammed into a building shortly before 3.00am.

The 26-year-old male driver of the car was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital where his condition is said to be serious.

Meanwhile, an 80-year-old man died in hospital in Co Kerry following a two vehicle accident on Wednesday, said Gardaí.

He was fatally injured when his car and a lorry were in collision at Garranearagh, Caherciveen.

His female passenger remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The driver of the truck was taken to Cork University Hospital following the accident with injuries which were not thought to be life threatening.

In the North, the PSNI were investigating the death of 22-year-old motorcyclist on the Newry by-pass.

He was found lying beside his crashed bike late last night and officers were seeking to establish whether any other vehicle was involved in the crash.
