Man sought in Cork murder probe

Murder squad detectives tonight issued further details of a man sought over the killing of a retired barman.

Gardaí want to question the suspect, who was seen acting suspiciously and carrying a flat-screen television near Donal Manley’s home in Cork city around the time of the attack.

One week on from the murder, officers revealed that the man may also have been carrying a black umbrella.

Detectives said they believe the suspect, who is around 6ft and of strong build, hailed a taxi near the barman’s High Street home and travelled into the city centre.

They appealed for any cab drivers operating in the area or on the nearby Southern and Douglas roads last Friday evening to contact them.

A number of eyewitnesses have reported seeing a man matching the Garda description.

Detectives are examining the possibility that Mr Manley, a native of Grenagh, near Blarney, Co Cork, may have known his killer and let him into his home.

Another theory is that the culprit may have tricked his way into the house or was disturbed during a burglary.

Mr Manley, a 62-year-old single man who lived alone, died from serious head injuries.

His battered body was discovered on Sunday by investigators and a fire crew after neighbours grew concerned.
