Final report of Morris Tribunal criticises senior Donegal Gardaí

The final report of the Morris Tribunal has criticised some senior Gardaí in Donegal for allowing a Sergeant run a campaign of harassment against a local publican and his family in the late 1990s.

The tribunal was set up in 2002 to investigate allegations of abuse of Garda powers in Donegal.

Previous reports of the Morris inquiry found that some named Gardaí had set up bogus arms finds, planted evidence, had been negligent in investigating the death of cattle dealer Richie Barron whose body was found on a roadside twelve years ago, and had illegally detained and mistreated several suspects.

The latest report dealt with complaints by the McBrearty family over their treatment by Gardaí following the death of Mr Barron.

The report, published today, concluded that senior Gardaí had knowingly allowed Sergeant John White conduct a campaign of harassment against the McBrearty family.
