Irish people urged not to travel to Georgia

The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising Irish people not to travel to Georgia as conflict between the nation and Russia deepens.

Even though troops are being withdrawn from disputed South Ossetia, more are being mobilised in another breakaway area on the Black Sea.

Abkhazia's President has issued a decree putting its troops on high alert – it is also mobilising some of its reservists.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili says they are determined to win the war.

“We are in our own territory, protecting ourselves from daily bombardment.

“Russian aviation has being deliberately and very cruelly targeting and killing civilians,” he said.
