Young Irishman drowns in Ibiza swimming accident
An Irish man who drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Ibiza was named by officials today.
Brian Francis Farrelly, from Dublin, got into difficulty after jumping into the pool in San Antonio on Sunday morning.
The 20-year-old had only arrived on the Spanish holiday island the day before.
Guests at Hotel Brisa are believed to have raised the alarm and local police and paramedics pulled him out of the water but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was offering consular assistance to Mr Farrelly’s family.
Meanwhile, the family of a young Irish soldier who plunged to his death from an ancient wall during a bull-running festival in Spain are preparing to take his body home.
Aidan Holly, from the small village of Tarbert in north Kerry, fell 30m from the old ramparts in Pamplona on Sunday ahead of the first day of the San Fermin festival.
It is understood the 23-year-old, who was a member of the 4th Battalion at Collins Barracks in Cork, was dead for several hours before he was found.
Mr Holly, who joined the Defence Forces last July, was visiting the bull- running festival, which attracts thousands of tourists, while on annual leave.
The three-star private is entitled to military honours at his funeral.
