Libertas welcomes Lisbon poll findings

Libertas chairman Declan Ganley has tonight welcomed the results of the latest Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post, which shows the gap between the Yes and No sides of the Lisbon campaign narrowing to 8%.

Ganley said that the poll's findings showed that an intensive and expensive spending spree by supporters of the treaty had served only to narrow the gap between the two sides.

However, he warned supporters that they must work “every day and night” between now and June 12 in an attempt to secure a No vote.

“This poll shows that despite two weeks of intensive campaigning by the Yes side, and repeated personal attacks on people opposed to the Treaty, the gap has in fact narrowed,” he said.

“We are seeing a referendum campaign that will go down to the wire. Every vote will count. I am confident, however, that the trends that we see in this poll will deepen as we approach polling day. One thing is clear - the more people learn about Lisbon, the less they like it.

“In the next three weeks, we will campaign relentlessly for a No vote, - a vote that will keep Ireland's Commissioner, keep our voice in Europe strong, keep back doors to tax meddling closed, and protect the interests of Irish farming.

“Lisbon is not a party political issue. Despite what Brian Cowen may say, it is possible to be a loyal supporter of a political party and conscientiously object to Lisbon. Libertas is appealing to voters of all political persuasions to take a step back from party politics, and do what is best for the country and the rest of Europe.”
