Irishman arrested on suspicion of fraud at Cheltenham

A Cheltenham race-goer was today arrested on suspicion of fraud after he was caught in possession of €5,000 worth of counterfeit notes.

The 49-year-old man, who is understood to be Irish, was being questioned at Cheltenham Police Station tonight.

Gloucestershire police said the only other crimes on the course were two pick-pocketing incidents

Detective Inspector Robert Heywood said: "Overall the day, in terms of policing, has been uneventful. We have had no reports of disorder and people have been entering into the spirit of the races and having a good time.

"It is unfortunate that we have had some complaints of pick-pocketing and a substantial amount of money stolen from one racegoer and I would remind the public to keep as little cash as possible on them while at the races."
