Appeal court upholds sentence for Limerick man
The Court of Criminal Appeal has upheld the seven-year prison term imposed on a Limerick man who was was caught in possession with almost €500,000 worth of drugs and guns, following an appeal from the DPP that the sentence was unduly lenient.
The find included including two sub-machine guns and almost 1,200 rounds of ammunition.
Last June Aidan Radmall (aged 36) originally from Corbally, Limerick, acted as a runner for a criminal gang based in Limerick.
The separated father of six, with addresses in Clonile, Old Cratloe Road, Limerick, and Bay View Apartments, Kilkee, Co Clare was sentenced to seven years in jail at Limerick circuit Court.
The DPP appealed that sentence on the grounds that it was unduly lenient.
Today counsel for the DPP Conor O'Sullivan argued that the sentence did not take into account the firearms offences.
Counsel for Radmall Brendan Nix SC, said that the all relevant factors, including his client's early plea of guilty, had been taken into account when the sentence was being formulated.
He added that his client was currently studying for a degree in education, so that he could qualify as a teacher.
The three judge CCA of Mr Justice Joseph Finnegan presiding sitting with Mr Justice Michael Hanna and Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said that in the circumstances the sentence should be left undisturbed.
Last year Radmall pleaded guilty to having heroin worth €400,000 amphetamines with an estimated value of €38,000 and cannabis worth 100 in a city centre flat at Cecil St on June 29 last.
He also pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of a Glock semi-automatic pistol, an Intra Tech submachine gun, a Skorpian machine pistol, a Beretta semi-automatic pistol, six stun guns and almost 1,200 rounds of ammunition.
