The renowned psychiatrist, author and broadcaster Anthony Clare has died suddenly at the age of 65.

Dr Clare, one of Ireland's leading psychiatrists, passed away unexpectedly in Paris over the weekend.

He was born in Dublin in 1942 and educated at Gonzaga College.

He underwent initial psychiatry training at St Patrick's Hospital in Dublin and went on to be appointed medical director at the facility.

He subsequently moved to St Edmondsbury in Lucan, where he was due to retire from his post as consultant adult psychiatrist in December.

Dr Clare will be remembered for his BBC Radio 4 series 'In the Psychiatrist's Chair' and was hugely respected for his efforts to demystify psychiatry.

He is survived by his wife, Jane, and seven children.
