Government urged to recognise sign language

The deaf community in Ireland is urging the government to recognise sign language as Ireland's third official language.

The call comes as the Irish Deaf Society launches its third 'Sign Language Awareness Week'.

The aim of the initiative, which will see a variety of events taking place, is to educate people about the significance of sign language.

The Irish Deaf Society says sign language must get a formal recognition in the Irish Constitution.
