Suspected fighting dogs seized in Belfast

Two dangerous banned dogs were today seized by the Ulster Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) following raids in south Belfast.

A treadmill, steroids and training manuals were also found during the swoop at a house in The Village area this morning, the animal welfare group said.

The American Pitbull-type animals were taken away but no arrests made following discovery of the alleged fighting dogs.

The operation followed information received following the BBC’s dog-fighting documentary last week.

A USPCA spokesman said: “The televised programmes exposed this illegal activity as a repugnant abuse of dumb animals, today’s raids will prevent dogs being subjected to the atrocities seen by millions and hopefully bring those responsible for their suffering before the courts.”

Dog wardens from Belfast City Council and police were also involved in today’s intervention.

A City Council spokeswoman said a file would be prepared and prosecution considered.
