Hain says Sinn Fein and DUP must live up to commitments

Northern Secretary Peter Hain has warned Sinn Féin and the DUP that he will only call Assembly elections if they live up to their commitments.

Yesterday, Sinn Féin voted to endorse the PSNI, removing one of the last hurdles to the restoration of devolution in the North.

The DUP has given the move a guarded welcome, saying republicans must demonstrate their support for policing before unionists will agree to share power.

Speaking about the latest developments today, Mr Hain said: "There now needs to be delivery of practical co-operation with the police by Sinn Féin and delivery on practical power-sharing by the DUP.

"Provided these two are in place, I think we can move towards an election on March 7th, with power-sharing and devolution on March 26th.

"I don't want the voters of Northern Ireland to trudge down to polling stations in a pointless exercise. We can't have another election to an Assembly that might not exist."
