Customs officers today seized 1.2 million cigarettes in a container at Waterford Port.

The Revenue’s Customs Service said the ‘Super King’ packs have a value of €360,000 and posed a potential loss of €290,000 in taxes to the Exchequer.

The cigarettes were concealed in a container on a vessel which had arrived from Rotterdam.

A Revenue spokesman added: “The find resulted from risk profiling. Enquiries are continuing.”
