Drink and perfume haul auctioned for charity
Goods confiscated from travellers at Dublin Airport are to be auctioned off for charity today.
Much-needed funds will be raised for The Carers Association as Christmas shoppers snap up hundreds of bottles and potions.
More than 1,600 surrendered items were handed over to the cause from Dublin Airport Authority following the introduction of the new EU aviation security regulations almost four weeks ago.
They include 600 bottles and cans of beer, 272 bottles of spirits, 192 bottles of perfume and gift sets, 130 bottles of wine, 95 miniature bottles of spirits, 40 miniature bottles of wine and 30 bottles of champagne.
Cash raised from the auction, to be held in the Town House Hotel, Newbridge Road, Naas, Co Kildare, from 6pm to 8pm, will go towards addressing the deficit in vital services and supports for family carers, including respite, information and training.
Renowned football manager and patron of The Carers Association Mick O’Dwyer and TV personality Sean Ban Breathnach will host this special event.
“The Christmas holidays, so anticipated by many, are often a very lonely and stressful time for family carers,” said Catherine Cox, of The Carers Association.
“Respite and day-care services often close over Christmas leaving family carers with a 24-hour job caring for their loved ones.
“Christmas can also be a very expensive time for family carers, where many of the hidden costs of caring are at their peak, such as electricity and heating as well as all the usual costs associated with Christmas.
“This auction will be great for shoppers so close to Christmas and excellent for family carers allowing us to continue providing essential services to family carers.”
The new EU aviation security regulations state that passengers must not bring liquids in containers measuring more than 100mls through the passenger security screening area.
Liquids in containers measuring 100mls or more can be purchased beyond the passenger security screening area.
