A man has been shot dead tonight just yards from Croke Park in Dublin's north inner city.

A man has been shot dead tonight just yards from Croke Park in Dublin's north inner city.

It is understood two men pulled up on a motorcycle at the junction of Ballybough Road and Clonliffe Avenue at around 4.55pm and opened fire before speeding off.

The victim, believed to have been in his 40s, was shot several times. He was taken to the nearby Mater Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigating detectives believe a handgun was used in the killing.

The scene has been sealed off for officers from the Garda Technical Bureau to examine the area for clues.

Gardaí still trying to establish a motive for the shooting have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station.
