More than 500,000 names removed from electoral register

More than half a million names have reportedly been removed from the draft electoral register as part of a Government campaign to update the list.

However, reports this morning say up to one-third of these name may be restored by the November 25 closing date for amendments to the register.

Last week, Minister for the Environment Dick Roche conceded that some eligible voters may have had their names inadvertently deleted as a result of the €12m updating process.

He is due to appear before the Oireachtas Environment Committee today to discuss the matter, but he has already rejected calls from the committee for the amendments deadline to be extended.
