Train drivers agree to end strike

Rail services throughout the country are getting back to normal this morning following a decision by train drivers to end their unofficial strike.

They decided to end their action in the early hours of this morning following marathon talks with their union officials.

The action caused widespread disruption to services in Dublin, Cork and the west of the country over the past two days.

The drivers first downed tools on Monday as part of a dispute over the introduction of new inter-city trains which they had not agreed to operate.

Iarnród Éireann has also decided to delay the introduction of the new trains until next Monday in order to create space for further negotiation on the issue.

Those negotiations are due to get underway this morning under the guidance of industrial relations mediator Phil Flynn.
