Watch: Callum Wright sinks Rangers with stoppage-time winner for Hibernian

Derek McInnes suffered a damaging home debut as Rangers boss with a 2-1 William Hill Premiership defeat to Hibernian with star striker Youssef Chermiti carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

David Gray’s side took the lead in the 11th minute with a Josh Campbell penalty after VAR had flagged up Vanja Dragojevic, making his first Gers start after signing from Partizan Belgrade, had fouled visiting defender Jason Kerr in the area.

There was more woe before the break when Chermiti, subject to a failed bid by Galatasaray for a reported club record fee of £22million, having to go off after picking up an injury.

Rangers pushed forward relentlessly and were rewarded in the 85th minute when Hibs defender Miguel Chaiwa turned the ball past goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger.

However, in the third minute of added time, substitute Callum Wright guided a shot into the far corner of the net for a stunning Hibernian winner.

With Celtic and St Mirren both on six points from two William Hill Premiership games, the Light Blues are five behind and already chasing with McInnes looking for his first win after three matches in the Ibrox hot seat.

Rangers face Jagiellonia Bialystok in the second leg of their Europa League third-round qualifier at Ibrox on Thursday night before hosting St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup on Sunday and McInnes’ tenure is already looking fraught.

There was undoubtedly pressure on McInnes after starting with a 1-1 league draw with Dundee United and a 2-1 Europa League qualifying defeat by Jagiellonia Bialystok in Poland.

The former Rangers midfielder’s team selections had also come under scrutiny and this time he made six changes, notably South Africa centre-back Olwethu Makhanya, in for his debut, while 20-year-old midfielder Dragojevic made his first start.

There was some surprise and confusion when referee Don Robertson was asked by VAR Matthew MacDermid to check the pitch side monitor and then pointed to the spot, judging that Kerr had been fouled at a corner moments earlier by his marker Dragojevic who was booked.

Campbell sent Ivor Pandur the wrong way with a confident spot-kick which increased an anxiety among the home support which had been bubbling under.

Moments later, Chermiti screwed a shot wide, and in the 24th minute Hibs defender Kanayo Megwa cleared a shot off from the Moroccan forward off the line.

Hibernian goalkeeper Sallinger then made a decent save from left-back Tuur Rommens’ long-range effort before Chermiti was replaced by Ryan Naderi after crashing into an advertising board.

Midfielder Mohamed Diomande replaced Dragojevic for the start of the second half, with left-winger Findlay Curtis moving to right-back and Rangers continued to dominate the ball but more frustration followed.

Sallinger parried another Nico Raskin effort on the hour mark before the away defence got the ball to safety, then the goalkeeper tipped a shot from Rangers captain Lawrence Shankland on to the crossbar.

Thelo Aasgaard fired a 25-yard drive just over the bar but in the 85th minute, fellow substitute Djeidi Gassama raced down the left wing and his low cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Chaiwa, setting up a grandstand finale.

Sallinger saved a header from Shankland, but the drama was at the other end as Wright ended a swift counter with a fine finish.
