The Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has defended her department's decision not to renew the contract of its national policy advisor on alcohol.

Dr Anne Hope has been an outspoken critic of some Government policies on alcohol abuse, but Ms Harney insisted today that this was not the reason she was being dropped.
