The post mortem examination of a woman stabbed to death while waiting for a taxi in the early hours of this morning was taking place tonight.

The woman, 46, was attacked on Main Street, Naas, Co Kildare, shortly after midnight last night.

She was taken to Naas General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1.35am, a garda spokesman said.

Initial reports suggest the woman died of a stab wound.

A 49-year-old man was arrested following the fatal stabbing and detained by gardaí under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Naas Garda Station.

He was taken to Tallaght Hospital, but was later returned to the garda station, a garda spokeswoman said.
