A five-year-old boy has suffered serious burns after being injured when the fuel tank of a car exploded in Derry last night.

A five-year-old boy has suffered serious burns after being injured when the fuel tank of a car exploded in Derry last night.

The boy is believed to have been among a group of children standing close to a burning car in the Galliagh area of the city when the explosion happened at around 10.30pm.

He sustained serious burns to his hands and face and was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry before being transferred to Belfast for further specialist treatment.
