Pipeline protestors demand Kenny state position
Opponents of a high-pressure gas pipeline being constructed in Co Mayo by oil giant Shell have called on Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny to state his position on the project.
The call follows a meeting of Mayo County Council earlier this week in which the Fine Gael chairman overturned a motion calling on Shell to build an offshore terminal rather than pumping gas directly onshore from the Corrib field.
Councillors initially believed the resolution had been passed unopposed, but Fine Gael's Henry Kenny ruled that this was not the case because he had not uttered the words: "This motion is resolved."
Campaigners against the project have described the move as "cynical" and have demanded that Deputy Kenny, a local TD, state his position clearly.
