Inconsistent rape sentencing discouraging victims, claims RCNI

The Rape Crisis Network of Ireland has claimed inconsistent sentencing in rape and sexual assault cases is discouraging victims from pressing charges.

The issue is due to be discussed at the body's annual general meeting in Wexford today.

Speaking ahead of the AGM, RCNI director Fiona Neary said many sexual crimes are not reported because victims were discouraged by lenient sentences.

"When they see incidents of very lenient sentencing, they really think twice about reporting and going to court," she said.

"This means much sexual violence in Ireland remains unreported."
