NGOs accuse Govt of not doing enough to tackle racism

A coalition of non-governmental organisations has accused the Government of failing to do enough to tackle racism in Ireland.

In a report published today, the alliance said the Government was refusing to admit the extent of racism and not doing enough to counter it.

Spokesperson Rosemary Warner said: "They need to show leadership on the issue, they need to consult with the people who are suffering racism and they need to ensure that there's adequate funding, training, amendment of legislation [to address the matter]."

Today’s report was drawn up to counter the positive spin in a recent Irish government report to the United Nations on the elimination and prevention of racial discrimination.
