Heavy wind and rain to batter north and west
The north and west of the country are preparing for high winds and heavy rain later today following a severe weather warning from Met Eireann.
Forecasters have warned that wind speeds could exceed 80mph in some areas, while heavy rain and high tides could also trigger coastal flooding.
Gusts of up to 60mph or 70mph have also been predicted for the rest of the country, with the storm expected to ease overnight.
Motorists have been advised to take care during the adverse conditions and beware of surface water.
Cyclists and pedestrians have also been warned to exercise extra caution.
The Irish Insurance Federation, meanwhile, has advised policy holders to contact their insurance firm if their homes are damaged by the storm.
Spokesperson Carmel Mulroy said: “Many insurers have emergency helpline numbers for their customers and we’d like to remind policy holders that household buildings and contents insurance will cover damage caused by storms.
“Insurers will also pay for the cost of alternative accommodation, typically, if the house becomes uninhabitable.”
