The Irish Red Cross has appealed for funds for the victims of yesterday's massive earthquake in south-east Asia.

The Irish Red Cross has appealed for funds for the victims of yesterday's massive earthquake in south-east Asia.

The organisation has already arranged for the immediate transfer of emergency funds of €100,000 in immediate aid in response to an international Red Cross/Red Crescent appeal for €5m.

The aid agency has said that medical supplies to prevent and treat water-borne diseases are vitally needed.

Malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory tract infections are the major threats to health now as the search for the missing continues and the bodies of those killed by the impact of the waves or drowned, are recovered and buried.

Members of the local Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in each of the countries affected have been mobilised to set up first aid units and distribute aid.

Credit card donations can be made to the Irish Red Cross on CallSave 1850-50-70-70 or www.redcross.ie
