Alcohol consumption falls
A new drinks industry report shows alcohol consumption is falling back to 1999 levels.
The study also shows the sector accounts for 80,000 full-time jobs, and is worth €2bn in taxes each year to the Government.
It also indicated that Ireland exports more alcoholic than dairy products.
Dick Dunne of the Drinks Industry Group said that we have the most heavily-taxed alcohol in Europe.
“In comparison to the rest of Europe, we have the highest excise duty on both wine and beers and the second highest excise duty in Europe on spirits – and that coming with a high VAT rate of 21% as well," he said.
“So, when you compare the Irish drink prices to the prices across Europe you can see the huge difference.”
