The dietary requirements of many Irish toddlers are not being adequately met, according to a survey commissioned by the food firm Cow & Gate.

The survey found that many toddlers do not consume enough fruit and vegetables, despite repeated campaigns about the importance of healthy eating among children.

It also found that Irish children are eating too much sugary and salty foods at a very young age.

Speaking at the launch of the survey today, nutritionist Aileen Regan said: "What a lot of people don't know is that toddlers' requirements for certain nutrients like iron, zinc and vitamin D are really, really high and, therefore, it is quite difficult to meet those requirements."
