Cross-border competition helps foster unity

A trophy marking cross-border co-operation was awarded today to a women’s football team from Dublin.

British ambassador Stewart Eldon and Tánaiste Mary Harney presented Peamount United with the Ambassador’s Cup at this year’s Co-operation Ireland women’s soccer tournament in County Dublin.

The ladies team ran out three-two winners against Northland Raiders from Newtown Ardes, County Down.

The event, now in it’s fourth year, also saw the two teams, who initiated the competition, battle for the Co-operation Shield at O’Haire Park, Newcastle.

It is hoped the Shield will mark an annual challenge match between the two teams.

Four teams took part in this year’s event: Peamount and Straida United from the Republic and two teams under the Northland Raiders name from Bangor and Newtown Ardes.
