Bloody Sunday soldiers branded a 'death squad'
A lawyer representing the family of one of the Bloody Sunday victims has described the British soldiers involved in the incident as a “death squad”.
Lord Gifford, QC, made the accusation during his closing submission to the Saville Inquiry set up to investigate the killing of 13 unarmed civilians by the British army in Derry on January 30, 1972.
He said 22-year-old Jim Wray, one of the victims, was murdered by a group of soldiers, each of whom had given “contradictory and manifestly false” evidence.
Mr Wray and others, he said, were shot “for no other reason than that they were easy targets”.
