Govt action urged to prevent Israeli aggression
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) has called on the Government, in its role as president of the EU, to do more to halt ongoing Israeli military operations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Dozens of Palestinians, many of them civilians, have been killed during the most recent incursions in the Gaza Strip in the past few weeks.
The Israeli military is also in the process of demolishing hundreds of homes in the Rafah refugee camp, leaving thousands of Palestinians homeless.
The PCHR said the Government’s response to the operations was inadequate.
It said the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition was failing to honour its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention to do all it could to prevent "collective punishment".
The PCHR called for the suspension of all EU-Israel trade agreements until Israel improves the human rights situation in the occupied territories.
Amnesty International has condemned Israel’s ongoing demolitions in the Gaza Strip as a war crime, but the Israeli government has insisted that the buildings being demolished were used by Palestinian militants to attack Israeli soldiers and, as such, were legitimate military targets.
