Cox to receive award for services to EU peace and unity
European Parliament president Pat Cox is to receive an international award for his services to European peace and unity.
The Irish politician will be presented with the German Charlemagne Prize on May 20 in recognition of his work on EU integration and the enlargement of the union.
The prestigious Charlemagne Prize was established in 1949.
Previous winners include Winston Churchill, Henry Kissinger, Wim Duisenberg, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton. Pope John Paul II is also due to receive the prize next Wednesday, making 2004 the first year when the award has been presented to two people.
