Drinkers may face alcohol abuse warning
Health warnings could soon appear on cans and bottles alerting Irish drinkers to the dangers of alcohol abuse, it emerged today.
The Government is considering the introduction of compulsory warnings on alcohol products similar to those which appear on cigarette packets.
Advertising campaigns and promotions for alcoholic drinks which target young people are also under review.
“One of the points an inter-governmental task force is looking at is putting a health warning on cans and bottles of alcohol,” confirmed a department of health spokesman.
“It is certainly something that is being considered.
“The promotion of alcoholic drinks to young people is another focus.
“Marketing campaigns such as Guinness sponsoring the Witness music festival and promotional offers in colleges and universities, are being looked at carefully.”
He said ministers were currently taking advice on whether such a move would need to be passed in Brussels.
The task force on alcohol is expected to report to health minister Micheal Martin with its recommendations later this month.
If plans are approved, warnings could appear on alcohol products later this year, following a three-month notification period.
