Equality Authority to address double discrimination

The Equality Authority has said it will strive to end the double discrimination often suffered by members of ethnic minorities who also have a mental disability.

In highlighting the deficiencies in services for these people, Chief Executive of the Authority, Niall Crowley, says it is now up to the Government and those providing services to address these problems.

"We have for the first time produced knowledge in relation to this area. It's a crucial challenge for us to turn that knowledge into practice, and I suppose the key starting point will be, in particular, service provision to people with disabilities and that any new standards in that area reflect cultural diversity among people with disabilities, including travellers with disabilities."
