The Irish pharmaceutical industry has rejected criticism of time psychiatrists spend attending overseas promotional trips.

The Irish pharmaceutical industry has rejected criticism of time psychiatrists spend attending overseas promotional trips.

In his annual report for 2003, the Inspector of Mental Hospitals said consultant psychiatrists in Ireland were spending too much time attending these "lavish" promotions organised by drug companies.

However, the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association insisted today that such promotions were designed to ensure that consultants were giving patients the best possible care.
