The North's birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in recorded history, according to figures released today.

The North's birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in recorded history, according to figures released today.

The Statistics and Research Agency said 21,385 babies were born in the six counties in 2002, 577 less than the previous year.

More than one-third of the births occurred outside marriage.
