EC wants compulsory seatbelts on buses

Seat belts could be made compulsory on all new public buses under proposals announced by the EU Commission.

The draft directive could eventually see transport such as London’s red double-deckers introducing belts for passengers.

Under the plans, the Commission is hoping to make safety belts compulsory equipment on all new commercial motor vehicles from July 2004, Commission spokesman Gilles Gantelet said.
