Father on hunger strike over son's death

A Cork man whose son died following a confrontation with nightclub bouncers has begun a hunger strike outside the Dáil to protest at the State's failure to prosecute anyone in connection with the death.

Gardaí launched a murder inquiry after Andrew Moynihan's 23-year-old son, Adrian, died of asphyxia after a struggle with bouncers at the Sidetrax nightclub in March 2001.

The case was reopened last year after the Assistant State Pathologist, Marie Cassidy, said the actions of the bouncers contributed to his death, but no prosecutions were ever taken.

Speaking outside Leinster House this morning, Mr Moynihan, from Ballyvolane in Cork, said: "In the name of God, my son was dragged through a nightclub and killed inside the exit doors. Three bouncers were arrested.

"All this was seen on video, we have witnesses, the whole lot, and yet no prosecution. That can't be right. There's just one big cover-up and we're not having it as a family. As a result of it, this is what I'm left to do."
