Ugandan Army cleared of the murder of Irish priest

Ugandan authorities have cleared the Ugandan Army of any complicity in the murder of an Irish priest in the north east of the country last year.

Father Declan O'Toole from Galway, died when his convoy was shot at by soldiers in March 2002.

The two soldiers involved where subsequently tried at a military tribunal and executed.

The Irish embassy in Kampala had expressed the belief that the Ugandan army was involved with the murder.

However a report released today states that, "The death of Father O'Toole was the result of a criminal act of Corporal James Omedio and Private Abdalla Mahamed, acting on their own and their personal interests".
