Blast bomb thrown at police station

A blast bomb thrown at a security base in west Belfast was made safe by the Army today.

The device failed to go off after it landed inside the perimeter fence of Woodbourne police station on the Stewartstown Road last night.

It was later dealt with by Army bomb experts and a number of items were removed for forensic examination.

The device was discovered around 11pm yesterday following a telephone warning to a Belfast newsroom.

This latest attack follows an upsurge in activity by dissident republicans.

On Monday night, the Continuity IRA bombed Enniskillen Town Hall in Co Fermanagh, causing minor damage. Six police officers were injured during the incident.

The explosion occurred as councillors were preparing for a meeting.

The terror group later threatened to carry out more attacks.
