10 gardai asked to co-operate with May Day inquiry

Ten gardai who refused to co-operate with the investigation into garda assaults on protestors in Dublin last May could face disciplinary action or even dismissal, according to reports today.

The Garda Complaints Board, which conducted the investigation, has reportedly studied legal advice on how to proceed and has sent fresh letters of invitation to 10 gardai asking them to assist the May Day inquiry.

The questions to be put to the Gardai were compiled on foot of the legal advice.

Not one of the 150 gardai who policed the Reclaim the Streets protest in Dublin on May 6 agreed to identify colleagues who were video-taped beating protestors with batons.

The complaints board said at least seven officers who should have faced charges got away without punishment because of this refusal.
