Ahern admits Brennan at centre of Aer Rianta allegations
The Taoiseach has told the Dail that the Minister for Transport is the person at the centre of allegations concerning an unpaid drink and cigar bill at Aer Rianta.
Bertie Ahern also told the house that he expects the inquiry into the matter to be concluded by the end of the week, rather than the original estimate of 14 days.
Responding to queries on the suitability of the Minister’s own department conducting the inquiry, Mr Ahern said they were best placed to carry it out.
"In regards to it being the Secretary General of the Department of Transport that is where all the records of that department are.
"They will consult with whoever, needless to say I will be keeping a close watch on this to get whatever information I can."
In a statement released today Minister Brennan said, "I wish to state that to the absolute very best of my recollection, it being approximately 12 years, and in the strongest possible terms, lest there be any doubt, that I never personally received, authorised or had knowledge of the ordering, purchase or delivery of the alleged goods referred to in the newspaper article of Sunday last.
"I am hopeful that the full facts relating to this allegation can be established within days. I reiterate that when the reports are available I will publish full details immediately."
