Gardai recive file on organ retention scandal

Parents who discovered their deceased children's organs had been retained by hospitals are handing files on what happened over to the Gardai saying the inquiry into the scandal is a failure.

Parents who discovered their deceased children's organs had been retained by hospitals are handing files on what happened over to the Gardai saying the inquiry into the scandal is a failure.

The Parents for Justice Group has said it fully supports the move taken by a number of families at the centre of the controversy.

They hope that the Gardai will be able to investigate the hospitals concerned for failing to notify the coroner when a death occurred.

Spokesperson for the group, Fionnuala O'Reilly, says the move by parents is an act of anger and desperation and is the only avenue open to parents after the inquiry was unable to get at the truth.

She said: "Parents have put their wholehearted trust and faith in the inquiry process established by the Minister for Health in February 2000 and to date that inquiry has cost the tax payer €4.3m.

"It has not had the co-operation that it deserved to have from every hospital investigated and not one family has obtained one answer."
