Morris Tribunal: Garda allowed to use 'trumped up' evidence
The Morris Tribunal has heard that a memo circulated two years ago to Fine Gael's Jim Higgins and Labour's Brendan Howlin alleged that two high ranking member of the Gardai allowed a garda to use "trumped up" evidence to solve crimes.
The tribunal also heard that the anonymous claims were forwarded by the two politicians to the then Minister for Justice, John O'Donoghue.
The anonymous memo alleged that two serving assistant commissioners, Kevin Carty, who performed the original report into many of these allegations, and Tony Hickey, allowed Det Sgt John Whyte manufactured trumped up evidence to secure convictions.
The allegations concerned were sent in a memo two years ago to politicians Howlin and Jim Higgins, who then passed them on to Minister for Justice, John O'Donoghue.
The tribunal heard that the source of the memo was a retired former member of the Gardai.
It is alleged the informant was concerned the Carty Inquiry would be compromised because of his close working relationship with John Whyte.
Meanwhile Kevin Carty claims the allegations are false and malicious and are intending to assassinate his good name and career.
