Gardai are investigating at least three suspected attempts to defraud a number of religious institutions in Ireland.

Each of the organisations received a letter purporting to be from a senior religious figure in Africa. A bogus cheque for €46,000 was enclosed in each letter along with instructions to lodge the cheque in the institution’s bank account.

The correspondence said the money would then be collected by an Irish-based priest called Fr John.

Gardai believe the letters are a scam and has warned religious institutions and businesses to be vigilant and cautious.
