Police in the North have ruled out foul play in the death of a leading loyalist paramilitary who was found dead in his prison cell on Monday.

42-year-old Mark Fulton, the leader of the Loyalist Volunteer Force, was found dead with a belt around his neck in Maghaberry Prison in Co Antrim.

He is believed to have committed suicide.

A police spokesman said today that a post mortem examination did not indicate foul play in his death.

A second independent post mortem was also conducted at the request of his family. Mr Fulton, from Portadown in Co Armagh, was in custody awaiting trial on a conspiracy to murder charge.
